Duties: The incumbent provides treatment that promotes the prevention, remediation, and rehabilitation of acute and chronic physical and psychological dysfunction. Assigned a varied caseload of patients from medical, surgical, PM&R, neurology, NHCU, psychiatry, SCI wards, Polytrauma, amputees, outpatients and employees. Assesses patient's medical condition through chart review; administers a wide variety of physical therapy procedures through the use of specialized exercise programs, mechanical traction therapeutic massage, heat, cold, ultrasound, hydrotherapy, and electricity. Instructs and assists patients in improving pulmonary function and in learning and improving functional activities - gait training, transfers, daily living activities - and in the use of and care of prostheses and orthoses; modifying patient's treatment program within the limits specified! in the care plan outlined by the the Physical Therapist. Has knowledge and understanding of adverse reactions to treatment. Reports orally or in writing to physical therapist, monitors vital signs and observes patients during treatment, and compiles and evaluates data on patient's progress and response.
Work schedule: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of an associate's degree from an accredited community college, junior college, college, or university in a physical therapy assistant education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). [N OTE: All persons permanently employed as a GS-636, Physical Therapy Assistant on or before July! 17, 1996 (the date of this standard), are considered to have met this ! requirement in full. They may be promoted, demoted, or reassigned within the GS-636 Physical Therapy Assistant series. Any employee initially retained in this manner who leaves this job series loses protected status and must meet the full requirements in effect at the time of reentry.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: None required.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: GS-7 grade level - In addition to the basic requirements, 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level.
GS-8 grade level - Completion of 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-7).
