This is the position of Medical Support Assistant in the Mental Health Service Line (MHSL). The incumbent provides administrative and technical support in the organization, planning, implementation, and quality management for the various MHSL programs. The incumbent is required to be! self-motivated and demonstrate initiative and concern for the successful delivery of administrative services to MHSL Chief's office and staff psychiatrists. The position requires innovation and initiative in assuming new responsibilities as the situation demands. In addition to a comprehensive working knowledge of the residency/student programs, the work requires developing additional practical knowledge trough training, experience, and increasingly difficult assignments.
Provides administrative coordination for the management of the clinical programs within the MHSL.
Ensures that policies for the clinical programs are carried out.
Assesses the success of the policies overall in terms of compliance and documentation.
Coordinates the day-to-day operations of the clinical program among the parallel offices of the Chief, MHSL, Associate Chief, MHSL, the program directors at the Salem VAMC and the office of the facility Director, Associate Director, Chief ! of Staff and Nurse Executive.
Maintains daily personal and telephon! e contact with the administration/staff at the Salem VAMC and other VA medical centers.
Manages the equipment inventory database and tracking based on VA guidelines.
Assists the MHSL Chief and AO in the development of recruitment strategy for the service line.
NOTE: The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-05. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-05. The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate's education and experience, and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level OR four (4) years of education above high school.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds), straight pulling and pushing (2 hours), reaching above shoulder (6 hours), use of fingers, both hands and legs required, walking (3 hours), standing (5 hours), kneeling (1 hour), repeated bending (2 hours), near vision, ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors, hearing (aid permitted), and emotional/mental stability are required.
