Salem VA Medical Center (SVAMC) is currently recruiting interested Internists, Neurologists, Physiatrists, and Psychiatrists to join its experienced staff of physicians and health professionals as the Medical Director of the Mental Health Pain Program in the Mental Health Service Line at the Medical Center. The selected candidate will provide medical oversight and program leadership to the outpatient pain clinic and the inpatient pain program through this pilot program with the Mental Health Service Line. This position will be part of an interdisciplinary team that serves as the Medical Center and VISN 6 regional referral program for mental health patients coping with physical diagnoses encompassing varying levels of pain.
Salem VA Medical Center, located in the Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), is a 298-be! d, Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 1C facility s! erving Veterans in southwestern Virginia. SVAMC provides primary care and specialty care with a broad scope of available clinical services in areas of medicine, surgery, mental health, extended care and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, and supportive and social services. Salem VA Medical Center is also a teaching hospital, maintaining three active medical school affiliations with the University of Virginia School of Medicine, the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. In addition to our focus on Veteran care and our academic affiliates, Salem VA Medical Center has an active R&D program, with current research projects encompassing studies in a variety of specialties including endocrinology and metabolism, psychiatry & psychology, pulmonary disease, cardiology, nephrology, and infectious disease.

NOTE: Physicians employed by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) are paid commensurate with education, experience and quali! fications, using VAÂ's market-based physician pay system. TOUR OF DUTY: 7:45 am - 4:30 pm, with on-call or extended hours, as necessary.
In addition to providing clinical services consi! stent with the providerÂ's primary area of practice, the selected candidate will provide medical oversight and program leadership to the outpatient pain clinic and the inpatient pain program through this pilot program with the Mental Health Service Line. This position will be part of an interdisciplinary team that serves as the Medical Center and VISN 6 regional referral program for mental health patients coping with physical diagnoses encompassing varying levels of pain.
Functions:
- Clinical: Approximately 50% of the providerÂ's responsibilities will consist of providing clinical services consistent with the providerÂ's primary specialty practice.
o If a physiatrist, ability to lead assessment and therapies and follow VA guidelines and privileges of a licensed and boarded physiatrist.
o If a general internist, ability to lead assessment and therapies ! and follow VA guidelines and privileges of a licensed and boarded general internist.
o If a psychiatrist, ability to work with available non-opiate medications to assist with pain treatment and follow VA guidelines and privileges of a licensed and boarded psychiatrist.
- Administrative: Approximately 35% of responsibilities will consist of program oversight and management as Medical Director for the Mental Health Pain Program
o Leadership of a multidisciplinary pain treatment team.
- Education: Approximately 15% of the positionÂ's responsibilities will involve supervision and training for students and residents on rotation from the Medical CenterÂ's academic affiliates. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

- Citizenship. Candidate must be a citizen of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, Paragraph 3g.
- Education. Please see below.
- Licensure. Applicant must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- English Language Proficiency. Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), 7407(d).

- Post-Graduate Residency. Candidate must have completed a first-year residency , or its equivalent, in a residency program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed . Approved ! residencies are:
2. Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
PHYSICIAN REQUIREMENTS FOR EDUCATION: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
- Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
- Schools of ost! eopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
- Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth, or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials.
