Executive Director, Counseling and Psychological Services
George Mason University, a large public institution enrolling over 33,000 students, seeks an Executive Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to provide leadership to an International Association of Counseling Services (IACS)-accredi! ted center of well-qualified and dedicated staff; to consult a! nd coordinate with stakeholders invested in student care and the student experience; and to engage with a university and campus community that embraces creativity, innovation, diversity and collaboration.
Responsibilities include: * Ensuring the overall quality, timeliness and effectiveness of CAPS including psychological, learning and multicultural services; * Oversight of staff recruitment, hiring and supervision including supervision of the senior leadership team. Staff includes licensed psychologists and mental health counselors, psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, social worker, learning specialists, predoctoral interns, externs and assistants; * Providing leadership in the delivery of emergency services and crisis intervention coverage within CAPS and the university at-large; * Enhancing relationships and fostering partnerships with a broad base of campus and community stakeholders that result in improved delivery of services and programs to ! benefit students and university departments; * Providing consultation to campus groups including participation in assessment and management of individuals of concern; serving as a resource on crisis response, health and safety concerns; * Facilitating strategic planning to ensure quality, continuous improvements, efficiencies, and effective services. Consider sound assessment strategies, trends, and best and emerging practices in planning and decision-making; * Encouraging innovation in services and delivery methods to advance new initiatives critical to the success of Mason students and in response to institutional growth and priorities, expansion of programs at distributed campuses, and changing needs of students and the community; and * Managing fiscal resources, space and equipment.
Qualifications: Candidates must hold a doctorate degree in a mental health care discipline; be licensed, preferably as a psychologist, in Virginia (or eligible for licensure ! within one year of appointment); possess progressive professional exper! ience (minimum six years is preferred) working in clinical and/or a counseling setting; experience supervising professional counseling staff; and previous experience (beyond internship) in a university or college counseling setting.
Additional knowledge and competencies considered in the candidate selection process include: a leadership style that is collaborative, empowering and transparent; understanding of contemporary professional practices in the delivery of counseling and psychological services; familiarity with needs of diverse populations and with multicultural competency; knowledge of/management of crisis response, health and safety concerns; familiarity with accredited training programs (American Psychological Association); effective communication and interpersonal skills; experience applying and using technology to enhance delivery of programs and services; and experience with multidisciplinary teams, practices, and approaches.
