Salem VA Medical Center (SVAMC) is seeking interested primary care, family
and internal medicine physicians to join its experienced staff of physicians and health
professionals as a Compensation & Pension physician in the Primary
Care Service Line at the Medical Center. The selected
candidate will work collaboratively with Salem VAMC and the closest Veterans
Benefits Administration Regional Office in Roanoke, Virginia to provide compensation
and pension and registry examination services to the Veteran population.
Salem VA
Medical Center, located in the Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), is a 298-bed,
Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 1C facility serving Veterans in
southwestern Virginia. SVAMC provides primary care and specialty care with
a broad scope of available clinical service! s in areas of medicine, surgery,
mental health, extended c! are and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, and
supportive and social services. Salem VA
Medical Center is also a teaching hospital, maintaining three active medical
school affiliations with the University of Virginia School of Medicine, the
Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Virginia Tech
Carilion School of Medicine. In addition
to our focus on Veteran care and our academic affiliates, Salem VA Medical
Center has an active R&D program, with current research projects encompassing
studies in a variety of specialties including endocrinology and metabolism,
psychiatry & psychology, pulmonary disease, cardiology, nephrology, and
infectious disease.
T he VA Medical Center of Salem, Virginia is
located adjacent to Roanoke, both of which are nestled in the heart of the Blue
Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia. The Salem & Roanoke metropolitan area provides its residents with a reasonable

NOTE:
Physicians
employed by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) are paid commensurate with
education, experience and qualifications, using VAÂ's market-based physician pay
system. Candidate's education and experience ! will be reviewed by a Compensation
Panel in determining the salary ! of the applicant selected. The
recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy.

KEY REQUIREMENTS
Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required.

TOUR OF DUTY: Monday - Friday, 7:45am - 4:30pm
The successful candidate will function as a member of the Primary Care
staff at Salem VAMC, with primary responsibility for performing compensation
& pension and registry examinations. While the primary work lo! cation for
this position will be Salem VAMC, the collaborative nature of this position
will require occasional travel to the nearest local VBA Regional Office
(Roanoke, VA), VISN Headquarters (Durham, NC), other medical centers within the
VISN, and other locations as required for meetings and training. The selected
individual will be responsible for performing duties to include, but not
limited to the following:
·
Conducts C&P and Registry examinations according
to established policies and standards;
·
Reviews medical records, including military and VHA
generated;
·
Obtains medical history and physical examinations
pertinent to the requested examination(s);
·
Complete documentation of medical history, physical
examination findings, recommendations and conclusions using VHA-provided software
systems;
·
Orders needed medical tests from non-VA resources
! to expedite C&P exams as necessary;
·
Provides medical op! inions as requested by VBA for
determinations of service-connected disability and benefits requested by
Veterans;
·
Assists VBA Regional Offices and other medical
centers within the VISN, as necessary, to expedite resolution of
service-connected disability and benefits requested by Veterans; and
·
Performs additional ancillary clinical and administrative
responsibilities, as required.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
REFERENCE: Candidate must meet
the appropriate qualification standard for Physicians as defined by VA Handbook
5005, Part II, Appendix G2.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
·
Citizenship.
Candidate must be a citizen of the United States. Noncitizens
may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in
accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, Paragraph 3g.
·

L! icensure.
Applicant must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice
medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United
States, or in the District of Columbia.
·
English Language Proficiency. Physicians, including residents, appointed to
direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English
as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), 7407(d).
·

·
Post-Graduate Residency. Candidate
must have completed a first-year residency , or its equivalent, in a
residency program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in
which it was completed . Approved residencies are:
1.
Those approved by the Council on Medical
Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published
for the year the residency was completed, or
2.
Other residencies or ! their equivalents
which the Professional Standards Board determines! to have provided an applicant
with appropriate professional training.
The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if
the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
PHYSICIAN REQUIREMENTS FOR
EDUCATION: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a
course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must
have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of
Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Approved schools are:
·
Schools of medicine holding regular institutional
membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in
which the degree was granted.
·
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the
American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
·
Schools (including foreign schools) ac! cepted by the
licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth, or in the District of
Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS! : The physical requirements of this
position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending,
walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive),
repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements
include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing
legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can
vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple
priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability
to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may
be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent
exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials.
