Salem VA Medical Center (SVAMC) is seeking a full-time Physician (Primary Care) to join its experienced staff of physicians and health professionals in the Primary Care Service Line at the Medical Center. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive primary care for patients within the scope of a general primary care or internal medicine practice. The successful candidate's practice will be focused primarily on the outpatient primary care needs of the Medical Center, but may include inpatient medical, surgical, mental health and emergency medicine consultations as appropriate.

Salem VA Medical Center, located in the Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), is a Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 1C facility serving Veterans in southwestern Virginia. SVAMC is located in Salem, Virginia with community based outpatient c! linics in Lynchburg, Wytheville, Staunton, Danville, and Tazew! ell. SVAMC's primary service area includes 26 counties representing over 8,800 sq. miles with a population of over 112,500 Veterans. SVAMC provides primary care and specialty care with a broad scope of available clinical services. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, mental health, extended care and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, and supportive and social services.

Salem VA Medical Center is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. SVAMC maintains three active medical school affiliations with the University of Virginia School of Medicine, the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine; nine academic affiliations with prominent regional Nursing Schools; and over 80 academic affiliations with various colleges and universit! ies to promote the training of associated health professions. In addition to our focus on Veteran care and our academic affiliates, Salem VA Medical Center has an active research and development program, which has been fully accredited for over a decade. The Medical Center currently has active research projects encompassing studies in the areas of endocrinology and metabolism, psychiatry & psychology, pulmonary disease, cardiology, nephrology, and infectious disease. SVAMC has participated in a number of VA Cooperative Programs in the past, and is presently involved with ongoing VA Cooperative studies.

TOUR OF DUTY: 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with rotations through extended hour clinics.

Primary Care Providers work as leaders and members of a healthcare team that shares responsibility for comprehensive medical care with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention. The core Primary Care team consists of the Primary Care Provider, the team RN/Case Manager and a Licensed Practical Nurse. Veterans Health Administration Primary Care Model emphasizes a team-based approach to healthcare. As a team leader, the Primary Care Provider must promote, maintain and nurture positive relationships with the goal of efficient hea! lthcare delivery where each team member works at the top of his or her ! practice.. Primary Care Providers will be responsible for performing duties to include, but not limited to the following:

  • Maintains a longitudinal relationship with patients in his or her panel and addresses the full spectrum of primary care needs, including management of acute and chronic illnesses;
  • Performs a variety of disease prevention related activities including gender and age specific screenings (e.g. breast and colo-rectal cancer), mental health screenings (e.g. depression, substance use & abuse, military sexual trauma and PTSD) and health promotion activities including immunizations, weight management and exercise counseling;
  • Screens for, evaluates and treats uncomplicated common mental health disorders, including depression and common addictions, with referrals made to mental health providers for further evaluation and treatment as appropriate;
  • Performs common outpatient & office-based procedures;
  • Performs pre! liminary interpretation of common diagnostic tests including EKG and plain x-ray films;
  • Occasional travel to Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) may be required under special circumstances. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Candidate must meet the appropriate qualification standard for Physicians as defined by VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G2.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • Citizenship. Candidate must be a citizen of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, Paragraph 3g.
  • Education. Please see below.
  • Licensure. Applicant must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • English Language Proficiency. Physicians, includin! g residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficie! nt in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), 7407(d).
  • Physical Requirements. The physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials.
  • Post-Graduate Residency. Candidate must have completed a first-year residency , or its equivalent, in a residency pr! ogram approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed . Approved residencies are:
1. Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or

2. Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.

PHYSICIAN REQUIREMENTS FOR EDUCATION: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

  • Schoo! ls of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Associat! ion of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
  • Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
  • Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth, or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
