Intake Therapists act as physician extenders by providing comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis of psychiatric illnesses, and monitoring of behavioral and biological treatment interventions for patients presenting in the emergency room. Additionally, the Intake Therapist provides psychiatric consultations on the medical units at the request of the attending physicians. In conjunction with the ESD physician, on call psychiatrist and, occasionally, a representative of the local mental health authority (i.e., community service board pre-screener), the intake therapist must assess whether or not a patient meets the criteria for involuntary hospitalization: risk for self-harm, risk to others, or gravely disabled due to mental illness. This assessment requires a great deal of skill (i.e., therapeutic core qualities) and an adequate fund of clinical knowledge (i.e., diagnostic categories and suicide risk). This is a ! high risk intervention with potentially life and death implica! tions.
Qualifications :
Education : Master’s Degree required; with ability to be licensed within one year of hire required.
Experience : Two years post Master’s Degree behavioral health experience in hospital or acute care setting required.
Licensure/certification/registration : LCSW, LPC, PhD or PMHCNS required.
Additional skills required : Graduate level knowledge and skills necessary to modify to modify care according to patient’s age. Requires ability to interpret information and identify each patient’s requirements for care relative to his/her age specific needs. Ability to successfully complete generic and department specific skills validation and competency testing.
